In the Earth year 2269 AD, as Captain Kirk's own five-year mission on the USS Enterprise is winding down, the United Federation of Planets detected a rift in trans-galactic dead-space just beyond the boundaries of the Milky Way Galaxy. Here, where space is empty and devoid of any life, the Chasm of Stars appeared — several brand new sectors of solar systems and stellar empires — ruled by cosmic beings — intermingling with the normality of what was (until then) Known Space in the eyes of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets.
Unbeknownst to the rest of Starfleet's vessels (for the time being), the small, Lincoln-class science ship USS Advocate is sent ahead to the Chasm of Stars by the Federation as a scout ship. Captained by Ripley Cavill, their mission: to chart out the new sectors of space, seek out what (if any) lifeforms exist there, make peace where they can, and deliver as much information about the region (and any of its potential dangers) as they can back to the Federation as soon as possible.
It's only a matter of time before the Federation's many enemies — including, and especially, the Klingons and the Romulans — discover the existence of the Chasm of Stars and learn how to take advantage of its cosmic power for themselves, and the stardates are ticking with each moment the Advocate is not investigating the strange new worlds of this altered-reality region of space.

The Lincoln-class vessel (and its first refit variation) is a fan-creation of Ex Astris Scientia, borrowed because our author wanted a spherical science vessel but didn't want to use the canonical Olympic-class because this was set much earlier in the timeline than that, despite the Olympic-class design being created fairly early on in development from a behind-the-scenes point of view.
